What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic disease that affects millions of men and women, in which the facial blood vessels enlarge, giving the cheeks and nose a flushed appearance. Many people that suffer from rosacea often report feelings of low self-esteem, embarrassment and frustration. Common symptoms of rosacea include flushing and skin redness, but other symptoms can develop as the condition progresses such as a burning or stinging sensation. Some rosacea sufferers may also experience some swelling in the face.

Rosacea is what is known as a relapsing condition. This means that there are periods when the symptoms of rosacea may be particularly bad, then other times when it is less severe.

There are four types of rosacea. Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea, Papulopustular Rosacea, Phymatous Rosacea and Ocular Rosacea.

What Causes Rosacea?

The actual cause of rosacea is largely unknown although some experts believe that abnormalities in the blood vessels may be a major contributing factor for rosacea. A number of triggers have been identified that may make rosacea worse. These include things such as sunlight, stress, hot drinks, alcohol and caffeine, spicy foods and even menopause.

How Long Does Rosacea Last?

Rosacea is not a short-term condition, rather a chronic disorder, and it is often characterised by relapses and remissions. Those with rosacea that continue long term treatments are less likely to experience a recurrence of the symptoms.

There is currently no known cure for rosacea but there are treatments available to help you control the symptoms. Topical and oral antibiotics are effective, yet often leave individuals with treatment plateau associated with erythema and persistent flushing.

IPL Laser Rosacea Treatments at JR Medical

It has been investigated that the use of an intense pulsed light laser for the treatment of the redness, flushing, and breakouts associated with rosacea would have a significant effect. The treatment involves beams of light aimed at the affected blood vessels in the skin, shrinking them to make them less visible. The light used during rosacea treatments doesn't use dangerous UV or infrared rays and it doesn’t generate heat, so it can' burn the skin. Offering an effective and long-lasting solution to the inflammation, redness and uneven skin tones associated with rosacea.

Regular use of ZO Skin Health products can also achieve remarkable results, even with some of the most difficult skin conditions such as rosacea. Contact us to find out more.
