What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are a skin resurfacing procedure that can improve the skin's appearance.

Chemical peel solutions are used to soften or ablate the top layer of the skin in order to achieve a smooth, clear appearance and texture by stimulating the growth of new skin cells, stripping away skin damage with a non-invasive and nearly painless procedure.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

A chemical peel is applied to the face of the client by a trained medical professional. It is then left for a varying amount of time according to the practitioner's assessment, before being removed. Then, depending on the sort of skin peel being used such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (a.k.a AHA or acid peels), Glycolic peel, fruit acid or TCA, the dead skin would either peel off and shed dramatically or improve gradually. As the skin heals, it regenerates new tissues resulting in smoother, younger-looking and less wrinkled skin.

What Conditions Can Chemical Peels Treat?

Chemical peels can help to remove or soften the effects of sun damage, acne scarring or age-related or premature fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels can also help with the treatment of active acne.

As chemical peels remove the outermost layers of the skin, most commonly facial skin, this treatment can also reduce the appearance of scars and blemishes, age spots, freckles and dark patches. A chemical peel can't decrease the size of pores or eliminate deep scars.

Are There Any Side Effects to Chemical Peels?

After a chemical peel, your skin will be temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so you should wear sunscreen if spending time outside. As any swelling decreases, you might notice the treated skin forming a crust and your skin might darken or develop brown blotches. This should clear up within 1-2 weeks.

Other side-effects associated with chemical peel procedures include redness of the skin, which may last several weeks and in some very rare cases changes in colour to the skin or scarring.

What is the Aftercare Procedure for a Chemical Peel?

After a chemical peel, you should ensure that you follow a cleansing and moisturizing routine and apply any protective ointments to your skin.

It is not recommended to have a chemical peel after excessive sun exposure as dead skin is removed from your face during a chemical peel and if the skin is already sun damaged, you may run the risk of facial scarring or burns.
