Gym Face

Gym Face & Loss of Facial Volume in Southend-on-Sea, Essex at JR Medical

Are you suffering from gym face?

There have been various articles in the press regarding 'Gym Face'. When you start working out the fat melts away from your body, but going to the gym or working out could also be taking its toll on your looks.

What is gym face?

The Times state that “Over-exercising in mid-life can ruin your looks” when in reality the purpose of exercising is usually to improve the outer appearance, to look and feel healthier! As your body begins to look more youthful, you start to pay the price of this with drawn features, sunken cheeks and hollow eyes. It’s a phenomenon familiar to some who will switch the ratio of their fitness regimen to avoid it.

What causes gym face?

Journalist Peta Bee makes mention of two key factors; over-exercising and middle age. As we age, we start to lose hyaluronic acid, the molecule responsible for binding and retaining water, as a result, our skin wrinkles. Exercise leading to fat loss in the face can exacerbate this.

As a nation of adults who are healthier and more active now, perhaps even more than when they were younger, some fitness enthusiasts of mature ages are noticing a loss in facial volume as a result of intense workouts. It seems to be something that has become common in people who cycle, row or run a lot.

Who is affected by gym face?

Gym face isn’t confined to just women; it is an issue which can affect anyone who regularly takes part in high-intensity sports. However intense sports combined with menopause can make ‘gym face’ more of an issue for middle-aged women. Men also face the effects of ageing in the facial area with the ‘fat pads’ of the face, positioned above and below the cheekbones, diminishing with age and excessive exercise.

Men and women exercisers are common patients coming into the clinic for facial-volume loss, particularly in the cheek area, which makes them look prematurely aged. When you try to keep body fat low there’s an unfortunate trade-off and it’s that the face will invariably suffer.

Can gym face or loss of facial volume be treated?

It’s not all bad news, there are cases where men and women have noticed the volume loss due to the high-intensity sport, and have opted for lower-level sports such as Pilates and weights. However, not everyone is willing to give up their love of intense sports.
