Bioidentical Hormone Treatment

Male & Female Bioidentical Hormone Treatment in Southend-on-Sea, Essex at JR Medical

What is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?

BHRT is the use of Bioidentical Hormones to replace and rebalance the body’s hormones during the changes leading up to menopause or andropause in men and beyond.

People often mistake the symptoms of imbalanced hormones in men with signs of ageing. The good news is that these hormone losses and imbalances are easily correctable.

The most significant advantage of Bioidentical hormones is that the body doesn’t recognise the Bioidenticals as foreign and therefore tolerated better by the body and subsequently, patients who are concerned over the increased risk of breast cancer, stroke or heart disease with the conventional HRT would not have the same worry with Bioidentical Hormones.

What are Bioidentical Hormones?

Bioidentical hormones or Bioidenticals are substances that exactly replicate the same structure of hormones produced by our bodies. That means that the setup and arrangement of the carbon, oxygen and hydrogen molecules are exactly the same setup and location of the hormones naturally produced by our own body, whilst synthetic hormones have a different setup and sometimes additional atoms such as sodium or sulphur and therefore they act differently to our own natural hormone. Bioidentical hormones are 100% identical to the chemical structure of oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone found in the human body, as a result, they fit their hormone receptor sites perfectly so their messages are translated properly and their effect are more consistent with the normal biochemistry of the body.

Treatments with naturally occurring hormones are considered True Hormone Replacement therapies, whereas hormone treatment with synthetic hormones should be considered Hormone Substitution Therapy.

What About Men?

Bioidentical Hormone Treatment EssexHormones are just as important for men as they are for women. In fact, both men and women produce the same hormones, only in different amounts.

Andropause, the male equivalent of menopause, has begun to attract more attention from the media and medical community in recent years. Men entering middle age may report a loss of ‘joie de vivre’ – many may start to question their lives, their relationships and their work.

Amongst other conditions we specialise in, we offer expertise in treating patients with

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Hair loss
  • Low libido
  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Night sweats or hot flashes
  • Memory loss
  • Mood swings or irritability
  • Heart palpitations
  • Muscle loss or weakness
  • Sleep apnea or insomnia
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Constipation or increased bowel movements
  • Increased body fat
  • Gynecomastia (development of breasts in men)

Common hormonal imbalances in men include:

  • Andropause. Also known as the male menopause, andropause occurs as men grow older and their testosterone levels decline.
  • Adrenal fatigue. If your stress levels remain high for a prolonged period of time, your adrenal glands can't produce enough of the stress hormone cortisol.
  • Hypothyroidism. When your thyroid gland is underactive, it's not producing enough thyroid hormones.
  • Hyperthyroidism. An overactive thyroid gland results in high levels of thyroid hormones and an increased metabolism
