TruCheck™ Intelli is a blood test that looks for Circulating Tumour Cells (CTCs) – cells that may be shed into the bloodstream by a solid tumour. Their presence can indicate a higher risk of an underlying solid organ cancer, even before any symptoms have developed.
Who it’s designed for: asymptomatic adults aged 40 and over, with no personal history of cancer and no current symptoms. It may also be considered from age 35 for people with hereditary cancer risk factors, a relevant family history, or known carcinogen exposure.
What it can screen for: TruCheck™ Intelli can distinguish up to 70 types of solid tumours, which together account for approximately 81% of all cancer cases and 84% of all cancer-related deaths across Europe. It is not designed to detect blood cancers (such as leukaemia) or cancers of the lymphatic system (such as lymphoma).
How accurate is it:
- Sensitivity: 88.24% — correctly identifies 88 out of 100 people who have cancer
- Specificity: 96.3% — correctly identifies 96 out of 100 people who are cancer-free
As with any screening test, false positives and false negatives can occur. A positive result does not confirm cancer, and a negative result does not completely exclude it, which is why every result is interpreted alongside a clinical consultation.
What Happens If Your Result Is Positive?
A “CTCs Detected” result means an increased risk has been identified and further evaluation is recommended, typically cross-sectional imaging and a consultation with a clinician to investigate further. Importantly, the organ of origin may or may not be identifiable from the test alone.
It’s worth knowing upfront: follow-up investigation after a positive result can, and sometimes does, show no evidence of cancer. In that situation, your clinician may recommend a period of monitoring and repeat testing rather than immediate further intervention. Going in with realistic expectations about this possibility is part of making an informed decision.
What Happens If Your Result Is Negative?
A “CTCs Not Detected” result indicates a lower likelihood of cancer being present at the time of testing. Annual re-testing is generally recommended, since screening reflects your risk status at a single point in time, not a permanent guarantee.
